Exploring Contrasting Duologues: A Journey of Growth and Discovery in Theatre

Module Date: September - October 2021

Module Leader: Matthew Morgan-Stevens

Institute: Academy of Music and Theatre Arts (AMATA), Falmouth University

One of the pivotal modules in my second year of training involved a six-week theatre assignment, where I collaborated with a partner to bring to life two contrasting duologues. Our chosen pieces were Alice Birch's 'Hotel' and Simon Woods' 'Hansard.' Throughout this assignment, we carefully refined our performances, experimenting with various acting styles and character portrayals until we were satisfied with the final result.

For 'Hotel', my partner Jonah Waters and I opted for a young couple's retreat to a hotel that unraveled to reveal the male partner's abusive behavior. This particular role was a challenge as it required an intense and naturalistic approach to acting, which I had not previously attempted. Nonetheless, we portrayed the characters 'A' and 'B' in a way that effectively captured the essence of the play.

Playing 'Diana' in 'Hansard,' on the other hand, was an entirely different experience. As an older woman with a profound sense of intelligence and self-awareness, Diana was a character I had never tried before. Initially, I found it challenging not to resort to my usual style of playing a younger, more innocent character. However, the process of playing 'Diana' was super interesting and allowed me to grow as an actor.

I am immensely proud of the journey and growth I underwent while rehearsing for these two scenes. While I was unable to film the performances themselves, I am thrilled to share two rehearsal runs of both pieces that showcase the culmination of our hard work and dedication.
