Discovering Creativity: My Week as a Drama Teaching Assistant in a Secondary School

Work Experience Week: 17th July 2017 - 21st July 2017

Role: Workshop Leader, Drama Teaching Assistant

School: Heles School Performing Arts Plymouth

In pursuit of exploring the intricacies of teaching drama and inspiring young minds to unleash their creative potential, I decided to embark on a week-long work experience at a secondary school's drama department as a Drama Teaching Assistant. My aim was to assist in organizing workshops, trips and facilitating a range of activities for students in Year 7-9.

During my stint, the drama department had arranged an exciting week-long drama aspirations program. I had the pleasure of accompanying the students to various locations such as Theatre Royal 2 Plymouth, where they received a tour of the rehearsal spaces, set and costume building facilities. Additionally, we visited The Barbican Theatre Plymouth, where the students engaged in a workshop on physical theatre by a special guest actor. As an assistant, I had the opportunity to guide and support the students in harnessing their creativity and exploring their artistic abilities.

Moreover, I was entrusted with the responsibility of taking over a class of my own, devising and implementing my own lesson plan for the students, along with another individual my age who was also on work experience. The class spanned over two hours, and we had an array of activities planned to foster and nurture the students' creativity.

I thoroughly relished the experience of facilitating and observing the students' creative expressions. Witnessing their beaming faces brimming with pride as they performed their own unique creations to us was undoubtedly the highlight of my week. Overall, it was an enriching and rewarding experience that reinforced my passion for drama and teaching.
